TASK 3 (Development & Design)

INSTRUCTIONS

Task 3 (Development & Design)

Figure 2.1 ; original artwork

Figure 2.2 ; sketch 1

Description: Increase the contrast by deepening the shadows behind the flower arrangement. This would make the vibrant colors pop even more, adding depth and dimension.

Figure 2.3 ; sketch 2

Description: Decrease the number of bubbles, keeping only a few strategically placed ones to maintain the dreamy atmosphere without overwhelming the composition.

Figure 2.4 ; sketch 3

Description: Apply a subtle vignette effect by darkening the edges of the painting to draw more attention to the central area where the flowers and bees are clustered.

I started by using Ps to create the work following the three idea sketches. I added a black solid color layer and reduced the opacity to 61% , then used the eraser tool to erase some elements to make them look visible.

Figure 2.5 ; trial and error

As for my first attempt, I did it with an elegant typeface and placed it in the middle of the composition.

Then, I changed to a different typeface as the one I was using was too thin and not visible. For the refinement, I also added a black vignette following the idea of sketch 3.

After consulting with Mr. Fauzi, he suggested to intertwine the elements with the words to make sure they look integrated.

Rationale:

The original artwork is a mix of classic and surreal art, blending detailed still-life elements with dreamy, floating objects to create a magical and intriguing atmosphere, inspired by traditional still-life paintings. I used the original painting as the background and added only one layer of black solid color with reduced opacity. This highlights the erased elements, such as the glowing bubbles and bees, and makes the scene feel less crowded without diminishing the vibrancy of the original.

Besides that, I have added the title of the original artwork. The typography was carefully chosen to match the whimsical and elegant theme. A flowing script font was used to give a fairy-tale feel, much like the classic “happily ever after” endings in stories. The decorative swirls in the lettering add a sense of movement, making it feel natural within the artwork. To keep the text readable, its placement and size were balanced so it wouldn’t get lost in the details of the background. I also named my final design poster after the original artwork.

For the color, a soft golden tone was selected. This warm color stands out against the darker background while blending beautifully with the light reflections in the scene. A subtle glow effect was added to make the text feel like part of the artwork rather than separate from it.

The bubbles and bees symbolize how happiness, much like these delicate elements, is beautiful but fragile. This piece reminds viewers to cherish joy while it lasts, making “Happily Ever After” feel both magical and meaningful.

FEEDBACK

Mr. Fauzi suggested using Ps to create a new design poster instead of redrawing the original artwork, which would be too much work.

Attempt 1's typeface was too thin

Attempt 2, can try to blend the elements with the typeface

REFLECTION

For this task, I explored ways to improve Marc Dennis’ Happily Ever After using design principles. Through the analysis from task 2 , I developed several ideas to enhance the composition while maintaining the artwork’s surreal and realistic balance. I experimented with composition, contrast, then adding different typefaces to improve the overall of the whole poster. This task also helped me refine my ability to balance realism with surreal elements in a composition.

Through this task, I observed how important is of typefaces to influence the artworks. I also learned that simplifying certain elements can sometimes strengthen an artwork rather than weaken it. Additionally, experimenting with different layout adjustments made me more aware of how to guide the viewer’s eye through a composition. This task reinforced the idea that even small design choices can create a more cohesive and impactful visual experience.
