TASK 2

Typographic Exploration and Communication

Week 6

In task 2, we have to create composition using the knowledge we learned from the tasks earlier.

I started task 2 with doing research on how other people created their text formatting design.

Research :
Figure 2.1 ; research

For the layout #1, I made the right side's background to black and the text to white to create a strong contrast that draws attention to the key message, making the phrase "visualise a better world" stand out prominently. Apart from that, I also visualize the text 'visualize' by changing the text to white in color from a black background.

For layout #2, I designed the headline 'A' in a bold, oversized font to lead the reader to first looking at it, and then follow the flow from left to right, top to bottom. Then, as for the design of the headline 'code', I varied the letter sizes to make it look interesting and playful.

Also for layout #3, I wanted it to look like a "game code" style, so I designed the headline 'code' to look like a retro game typeface, and put them as the background of the whole composition. Then, I stack the rest of the headline to make it looked "build". After that, I found that the texts of the headline are overlapped, so I changed color of the text 'code' to grey. After changing it, I realized that the composition looked more balanced than using only black and white.

Referring to my sketches, I created three compositions of layouts.

Layouts :

In the video tutorial, Mr Vinod mentioned that we can try adding the blocks to cover the texts, this helps us to see the ratio and the arrangements more clearly.

Finally, I decided to choose layout #1 because it strikes a good balance between blocks of text and negative space, which makes the layout feel less overwhelming. In addition, layout #1 looks more visually appealing than layouts #2 and #3.

    FINAL text formatting layout :

HEAD LINE "Unite" "Visualise"

REFLECTION

Experience
When I first started working on this task, I felt overwhelmed, because there were more aspects to consider now compared to what I had done before. However, as I do more research, more ideas came to my mind. When I do really worked on designing, the process becomes smoother because every time I made adjustments to fit the composition, I came up with new ideas, which made me enjoy doing it even more.

Observation
From this task, I observed that covering the texts using blocks or print the design out helped a lot when we are designing, we can see the whole composition clearly instead of just keep zooming in because sometimes we will have the feeling of "aesthetic fatigue", where we might get too focused on details without seeing the bigger picture.

Findings
One of my key findings from this task is the importance of leaving negative space to offer visual balance. I chose layout #1 as my final design because for my layouts #2 and #3, they were too packed, whereas layout #1 gives the space to make the composition feel less overwhelming and allowed the message to stand out more clearly. From this, I realized that sometimes, less is more in design.
